You all know by now that i am no big fan of Cossacks 2 and yet i paid money for it and wanted to play it yesterday. It turned out i couldn't launch it. I installed the patch 1.2, i couldn't launch it.. I tested out compatiblity mode on windows XP Service pack 2 and 3 ... I downloaded an allegate patch from a fan side and that promised to get it work on windows 8... and ... it didn't work. Is here anyone who knows how to get it work on windows 8.1 without using steam ? I don't wanna buy the game again. Any ideas are welcome!
This program was installed with Cossacks 1. and this isn't a program. this is a windows component... DirectPlay is using for net-games.
The orginal Cossacks back to war is installed on my computer. Therefore Direct play should already be installed. Default resolution in Cossacks 2 is already on 1024x768. Doesn't work yet.
The solution could be similar to this one for windows 7. Q. The game i have does not run on Windows 7 home premium. is there a solution to this? A. Yes, first go to the installation folder, and rename the folder "Video" to "video1". With that the game will work, however the colors will most likely be a bunch of random color dots, to solve this you need to close the "explorer.exe" from your task manager, but since that is a bit troublesome, just copy this code: taskkill /F /IM Explorer.exe dmcr.exe Start explorer.exe paste it on a new notepad and save as "anything.bat" (I named mine cossacks.bat), after that paste that .bat file on the cossacks instalation folder. What that does it, it automatically stops the explorer.exe, lauches cossacks, and when you close cossacks the explorer will be back on! Note: This worked for me on windows 7. Changing the name of the video file just stops it running the intro video which is all that gives you the directx error. Running the game from a batch file allows you to kill Explorer run the game without colour errors and then it restarts you Explorer after you exit Cossacks. I named my file cossacks.bat and then changed my icon properties from running dmcr.exe to running cossacks.bat. It worked like a charm in Windows 7 anyway. Then you will find speed of game settings a bit touchy. Modern computers want to run Cossacks 1 too fast.
I tried all known fixes and suggestions for Cossacks 2 for over a year on and off. Could not get the game to run on my windows 8.1 at all. In the end i bought it on Steam along with Back to war and it ran just fine.
I also tried all of the stuff mentioned here and I think you just can't install the game on windows 8 .1 without stream. I mean first I had problems with the disks' then in the actual installation. Its just too damn old. It fine for me I played a little c2 at my friends house.
It is even more tricky to run C1 and C2 on ubuntu. All depends on the dedicated graphics and drivers you have. Worst ones are for Nvidia cards... But this is the colourful la vida loca with penguin OS.
yeah that's why I really want C3 to have SteamOS support so that it essentially can be played anywhere, or everywhere i need.
Even if you have Cossacks 2 on Steam you will have problems like the game profile won't be saved and the gameplay will be laggy. You get a message at every start saying " You have changed gamedata, Internet game will not be possible", when you haven't changed any gamefiles. The version of Napolenic Wars on Steam is 1.1 and not the latest version (1.2). Besides there are some gameplay bugs such as in Battle for Europe mode in some cases some of troops won't spawn and you will see them as your loss in the summary, or you get an "Assertion Error too musch handlers" message and the game stops working, etc. In my opinion a legally purchased game should be the latest version and should start without warning messages if you haven't changed the game files and the re-release of the game should work on newer systems and have less bugs than the original and not more.
There is also some problem, like when you capture cannon in the campaign it will remplace one of our unit, the spanish have a unit that doesn't work and ennemy cavalry stand in front of you waiting to be shot down. Must be a problem on my part but any battle I try to do on Toulouse region don't work, I have a black battlefield I can't do anything and then the game say I lost the battle and all my soldier are counted as lost (losing an entire veteran army coming from Russia was particulary annoying) For reference I play on Windows 7 with the steam version
Hi guys, i'm new here so hi everybody, i have a problem with cossacks 2 BFE, it won't work on Windows 7 because of Starforce protection system. NW works just fine though. Hey guys, I had the colored dots issue when I tried to reinstall American conquest. Is there an equally easy way to solve that?
I've had games with similar issues (Starcraft) and if I remember correctly, running it with a compatibility setting of 16 bit colors worked to remove those color issues.
