I had to post something to simply remark that this is terribly exciting. Stumbled across Cossacks III purely by chance. Hopefully once released it will receive more coverage as I would have been disappointed to miss it. I used to play Cossacks and then American Conquest with the Hawks group for years. I must have made hundreds of battle maps and I did some modding as well before Windows and computer upgrades left me unable to play the old games. I saw that Loner (a forum member) flattered me by using one of my models as his picture so I screen grabbed it and used it for mine as well so he would be a loner no more. The screen shots of the game look fantastic. Battle maps and models in glorious 3D and talk of lots of modding tools. Brilliant stuff. I am afraid to say I am quite sad and the thought of map making excites me more than playing the game. I cannot help but notice all the little fences and plants and tree types and buildings and carts and other paraphernalia that I will be able to use in new creations. Hello to any old colleagues by the way. Looking forward to playing and map making again with you soon. I will be sure to look in on a regular basis. Stu
Some good little bits of info here. Thanks for posting as usual. Without condor_fly we wouldn't know a thing. Glad to hear that animations of the environment are not final yet. I am really hoping we can get some animated trees added in.
I highly doubt it that would be very heavy in computer power. There are just too many trees in the game.
Wow great source of information! There seems to be more active exchange of information there than here in the forum. Seems to be updating hourly. Thanks Condor-fly for sharing.
That depends on the maps designed. there doesn't need to be huge forests all over the maps. I mean if Stronghold 1 could achieve it back when computers were running with 256mb etc i don't see why Cossacks 3 cannot have animated trees. Like the devs mentioned the game already runs on 3-5 year old hardware.
Well stronghold didn't have 500+ unit armies. However, if the maps are small enough then in that case it would be possible for specific maps. I was referring to the game in general, although it could be added like in aoe3 where if you choose very high settings then you get more effects.
True if you played the campaign. I played many editor created battles back in the day that used far more than 500+ men and never had any issues with the game. Crusader as well with thousands of troops on screen ran very well. Although to be fair there were very few trees on the crusader maps. Still if the devs have Cossacks 3 running well with 20k troops on 3 year old hardware and 10k on 5 year old hardware i don't see there being much of an issue with adding animated trees. Especially if they do what you said and have it so that it can be enabled/disabled via the options menu. I don't see the point in limiting the game just so that it can run on 5 year old hardware when it can be made optional for those of us with higher end computers. I'm not asking for the trees to sway like crazy as they did in Stronghold 1, just a tiny bit of movement every now and then to give them a bit of life. The static feel of Cossacks 3 will just feel very outdated to me. It's not a major issue, it's just one of those little improvements over the original i'd like to see.
The trees swayed in C2, and The hawks MOD of ACFB. And Hello Stu, So very good to see you again! I still remember the good ol days with us teaming up for the HAWKS team championships, playing your amazing maps! I can't get on the HK forum anymore, did we loose the forum?
Hey Daddio, good to hear from you again. Hopefully lots of old faces will appear again once C3 is released and word gets around. I am not sure what happened to the forum. I assume it simply fell into abeyance as players became fewer. Hopefully we can resurrect it or create a new forum for people who want to specifically play set piece historical battles.
I was a member of the HAWKS for a while. I made a map for AC/DN called Mechanicsville. Aye, the last I checked it was gone. No one to pay for it since it wasn't being used. But some of the folks migrated over to CDW(?)
The Hawks were a nice group of players for people who enjoyed that specific style of playing. I remember (although it is many years ago) C1 and the expansions having a slightly better map editor than ACFB because it allowed you to create scenarios with time limits etc. If ACFB had that feature I cannot recall it working very reliably or at all. If C3 has a similar editor, and the developers talk of the availability of modding tools is promising, then we may be able to make maps that allow for reinforcements to appear later on in the battles and with other variables. It looks like there will be lots of possibilities for map making and modding and that will be a wonderful addition by the developers.
Good to see you Stu! Been a long time. Unfortunately, the Hawks website is down do to technical difficulties that haven't been resolved just yet, but work is in progress. Apparently, there was a DoS attack on the site and who ever holds the site right now is too busy to fix the problem. Two of the old members are currently working on acquiring the site to bring it back up. Stonewall is still active, and a couple new guys have been playing the HEW mod, and HDN. Oh, and Lady_Lauren still plays when she gets a chance. I still play as well, but not much because it's a pain with my security knocking the game out all the time. Me
I think I have heard of Stoneveld, but no, I am speaking of [HWK]Stonewall from the HAWKS club. By the way, what is CDW? Me
Sorry, my bad. CDV the developers website has/had a support forum. For American Conquest, Divided Nation and etc.
